about this workshop

Would you like to be able to handle complex situations with more ease and confidence? In a scientific sense, a complex system is any system where there are multiple interacting elements that all affect each other and all interact simultaneously. Think of an economy, a traffic network, a family, an ecosystem or even the dynamics at a party. In this session we will explore the science of complexity and then go on to try out different ways of playfully making sense of complex situations.

The first thing that you should know about this session is that:
you will not be asked to do anything that you do not already know how to do

Humans have evolved in a complex world. On a deep, pre-conscious level, you intuitively understand complexity. However, you have probably been trained to use your rational, analytical mind above all else to make sense of the world. Complex systems defy this kind of analysis; in this session you will be invited to play with other ways of paying attention and interpreting what is going on around you.

Your guide will be Sophia van Ruth. Sophia has studied complex systems science at Schumacher College in the UK, she is and accredited InterPlay® facilitator and a qualified shiatsu therapist. She describes:

I came to a point where I realised that we can’t understand complexity using analytical logic alone. I then became interested in the way people pay attention and make sense of complex information. If we are not using our intellect, then how else do we make sense of the world around us? I came to realise that the practices of InterPlay® and my training as a shiatsu therapist had a lot to offer in this respect.”

InterPlay works with improvised movement, voice and story. You will first be guided through some of the insights from complexity science and we will then go on to use the practices of InterPlay to explore your deeper body wisdom around the ideas you have been introduced to. You will go home with some practices you can use in daily life to help you negotiate complexity more easily.
